The Departmet enhanced its capacity by creating several specialty units and acquired advanced tactical and technological equipment. Examples of the specialty units that contribute to the Department's success are a Special Victims Unit (SVU), an Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC), a Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad(CARS), a Canine Unit, a Motorcycle Unit, a Marine Division, a Neighborhood Impact Unit, A Youth mentoring Detail which includes, summer camps, basketball leagues, and a female juvenile Police Commission operate and are designed to strengthen and reinforce positive police/youth relationships.
In addition to the specialty units, the patrol, the investigative and narcotics units provide outstanding protection for the citizens and visitors alike in Stamford on a daily basis. The Department has officers who work with or are active members of the FBI Task Force, DEA, U.S. Customs & Homeland Security, ICE, ATF, and the United States Marshall's Office.
Chief of Police Jonathan Fontneau assumed command of the Stamford Police Department on December 13th, 2012 at a ceremony held at the Stamford Government Center. Chief Fontneau took command from Chief Robert Nivakoff, who retired October 1st, 2012. Chief Fontneau is the 15th Chief of Police for the Stamford Police Department.
